There are fifty courthouses in Los Angeles County alone. Some courthouses, such as the Van Nuys Courthouse and San Fernando Courthouse, handle a huge number of criminal cases annually. Smaller Los Angeles County courthouses, such as the Long Beach Courthouse, Downey Courthouse, Whittier Courthouse and Alhambra Courthouse, service smaller cities and areas and therefore handle a smaller number of cases.
The main Los Angeles criminal court is the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, named after Clara S. Foltz, the first female attorney on the west coast of the United States. The court is located on 210 West Temple Street, between Broadway and Spring Street, in Downtown Los Angeles. The courthouse was formerly known as the "Criminal Courts Building" or "CCB," and is still often referred to by those names. CCB has been home to many high profile criminal cases, including the O.J. Simpson murder trial and the recent murder trial of record producer Phil Specter. Judge Lance Ito, the presiding judged in the O.J. Simpson trial, still sits in department 110 of the Criminal Courts Building.
The Criminal Courts Building contains the mains offices of both the Los Angeles County District Attorney and the Los Angeles County Public Defender. The court handles the complete spectrum of criminal cases, including the theft crimes, drug crimes, marijuana offenses, domestic violence, assault and battery, sex crimes, robbery, murder, and other homicide and violent crimes. Many of the most serious gang-related criminal cases in Los Angeles are handled by a special team of "Hardcore" District Attorneys at the Criminal Courts Building.
The District Attorneys at the Criminal Courts Building are often some of the most skilled and aggressive in Los Angeles County. If you are charged with a crime in Los Angeles, you must challenge the prosecution with a skilled, tactful and aggressive Los Angeles criminal defense attorney to present your case and vigorously defend your rights.
