After defending over a thousand domestic violence cases in Los Angeles courthouses over the past 20+ years along with many trials, one of the common questions we get is how long does a domestic violence case last and what should you expect as a defendant?
First and foremost, as with most things in life there’s no definitive answer, especially when it comes to criminal cases with a wide variety of factors at play, and when looking at domestic abuse/violence cases with a multitude of elements there’s really no way to predict how long a case will last.
Secondly, that ties into hiring the best domestic violence attorney/firm with experience in these particular cases along with the judges/prosecutors at the courthouse where your case is being heard whether it’s the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Downtown Los Angeles (also known as CCB) or other courts throughout LA County (Burbank, San Fernando, Van Nuys, Santa Clarita, etc.).
Lastly, when facing charges for domestic violence it’s critical to retain a defense attorney that specializes in that area. As we’ve mentioned before, not all criminal defense firms are created equal and a law firm that specializes in DUIs is great at what they do, though they probably won’t be the best domestic violence attorney because that’s not their focus.
